Melamine is a material developed by the Watertown Manufacturing Company in the early 1940s under contract to the United States Navy. Melamine was originally used to make light and durable cutlery to replace the navy's heavy, fragile ceramic cookware, but was soon discovered to be a more convenient and modern alternative to uniform buttons.
Melamine buttons have a seam on the outside of the button, which sometimes leaves some extra plastic or blemishes from the molding process. However, if you're really not sure if something is made of melamine, try setting it on fire. The real stuff doesn't burn. Melamine also washes well and is very strong.
